Chapter 989 - 988: Qingcheng, the Greatest Display of Prestige
Shen Wanqing stroked his face. "How would I know! You’ll know when you see him. He’s in big business, he’ll definitely be happy to meet you. If you get any benefits out of it, don’t forget me."As soon as Wang Kefu heard that, he perked up, smacked her twice hard in a sort of praise, then after a while he said, "But look at the shitty state the company’s in now, even the old man is at his wits’ end. So tomorrow the whole family has to go to Qingcheng to apologize to that little sister of mine. Tell me, isn’t that brat Anxi going too far?"
He sighed again. "The old man, proud all his life..."
Shen Wanqing’s heart gave a jump and she immediately asked, "What? You’re going to Qingcheng?"
"Exactly." Wang Kefu clamped a cigarette between his fingers, took a drag, exhaled a long smoke ring and said, "The company can’t be dragged on anymore! Forget that. I’m asking you, you grew up with Anxi, was she... always this domineering?"
Shen Wanqing curled her lips uncomfortably, glanced at him again. "More or less."
Actually, no. Gu Anxi used to be pretty silly, happy all day long, and she didn’t have much to do with her. One was a rich young lady and the other the daughter of a servant, after all. But she really loved eating the pastries her mom made. She’d eat a bit, then condescendingly bring over some old clothes for her to wear. She never wore them once.
Because those were things other people didn’t want!
But there was still one thing of Gu Anxi’s that she did take—Qin Siyuan. Only... they had no future.
Shen Wanqing smoked slowly, a bitter smile on her lips—
Gu Anxi isn’t the same as before, is she?
Now everyone listens to her. How impressive.
Once Wang Kefu started talking about Gu Anxi, all those romantic thoughts vanished. He finished his cigarette and promptly rolled off the bed. "Alright, I’m heading back. The wife at home is about to blow the roof off."
He gave her another peck; Shen Wanqing had no choice but to play along a few times.
Only after he left did she stub out her cigarette, then dial to book a ticket back to Qingcheng for tomorrow morning.
...
Qingcheng.
Yunxi Hospital. Wang Keru and Gu Yuntian were in the car on the way home. In the car, Wang Keru sighed. "You’re not even sick, yet you insist on that ’use magic to defeat magic’ nonsense and stay in the hospital for days. Satisfied now? The beds there are nothing like the soft ones at home. When we get back I still have to give you a massage."
Gu Yuntian just smiled. "It’s because the food in the hospital is pretty good."
Wang Keru shot him a sidelong glance. "I think it’s because the nurses in the hospital are young and pretty."
Gu Yuntian pinched her cheek. "No matter how pretty, none of them are as pretty as you."
That did it—he’d offended the madam. Wang Keru snorted lightly. "Dirty old man."
Then she changed the subject. "Anxi was acting all mysterious early this morning. What’s she up to, making us come back and not even saying what for?"
Gu Yuntian, however, was quite calm. "When a child speaks, there’s always a reason behind it."
Wang Keru slanted a look at him. "Fine, fine, you just listen to her all day long. Whatever she says goes."
Gu Yuntian only chuckled.
Wang Keru smoothed her long hair. "That little brat might just come back today and give us a surprise. Let’s hurry home and have the servants make a full table of good dishes."
Gu Yuntian smiled without saying anything.
He had indeed heard a bit of something, but he didn’t plan on telling his wife. He knew she’d had things on her mind all these years. Maybe today would make her feel a bit better.
The car stopped at the gate of the Gu family residence. Wang Keru helped Gu Yuntian out of the car. The servants were busy setting off firecrackers and saying auspicious words. After handing out red envelopes generously, Wang Keru said, "Don’t you spoil him. He’s not sick at all, just wanted to stay in the hospital for a few days and look at the little nurses."
The quick-witted aunty immediately said, "Those young ones aren’t as good-looking as Madam."
"See, that’s what everyone says." Gu Yuntian laughed and went into the living room.
Wang Keru busied herself arranging lunch, directing people back and forth. The Gu house was boisterous.
The Gu residence was lively, and Qingcheng was even livelier. Ever since the Gu family moved away and the Qin family shifted their focus to Jiangcheng, the place of Qingcheng had quieted down a lot. But today was different.
A group of people, clearly wealthy just from the look of them, had come all the way from the airport to Qingcheng. There were several dozen of them, front and back, carrying dowry chests, all covered in uniform red cloth. It looked like a wedding procession, yet also not quite.
The crowd that loved excitement trailed after them, walking for two or three hours, circling around Qingcheng until they finally arrived at the gate of the Gu residence.
Firecrackers were exploding, voices rising in a roar.
Only then did the onlookers find out they had come to the Gu house. After asking around, they learned these were people from the Wang Family in Jiangcheng, and suddenly it all made sense. They were here for Wang Keru of the Gu family. It was said that back when she got married, her family didn’t agree and not a single person came. When Gu Yuntian was half dead, no one from the Wang family came either. Truly cruel.
But today, who knew what wind was blowing—the Wang family had come.
Outside the Gu family villa, inner and outer rings of people had gathered—several thousand in all—just to watch the show.
The noise also startled Wang Keru and Gu Yuntian.
Gu Yuntian narrowed his eyes slightly. "Keru, go out and take a look. Why is it so noisy?"
Wang Keru was in the middle of doing aerobics, drenched in sweat. "Noisy where? That’s my music."
Just then, a servant came running over. "Madam, Madam, your maiden family from Jiangcheng has arrived."
Wang Keru was overjoyed. "Anxi and Xichen are back? Quick, quick, let’s go out and see."
The servant wanted to say something, but a look from Gu Yuntian shut him up, so he said nothing more.
By this time, Wang Keru had already coiled up her hair and was walking out.
As soon as she stepped outside, she was stunned.
There really were a lot of people out there.
But it wasn’t Anxi. It was her own family.
The old man and old lady, her two older brothers and their wives, plus all the servants of the entire Wang Family—dozens of them. In front of them were piles of chests and trunks, the kind of grand display only seen when daughters are married off in Jiangcheng.
Wang Keru’s nose stung; she basically guessed what this was and forced out a smile. "Dad, Mom, what brings you here?"
Her eldest brother from the Wang Family was about to say it was all because of that brat, but he was cut off by the old man. In the end, Old Wang still knew the score. Though he was uncomfortable inside, he kept a perfectly courteous face and handled everything just right. "Keru, these years we’ve indeed wronged you a bit, so we’re taking the chance today for the whole family to come and make some noise for you."
Wang Keru was dazed for a moment. "Dad, weren’t you critically ill?"
Old Wang immediately felt awkward and gave a little cough. "Thinking about you youngsters, how could I bear to go? Once I started worrying, the illness just got better."
"Really?" Wang Keru let out a dry laugh.
She looked around; all around them people were talking—
"The eldest Miss of the Wang family had it so rough back then. Now she’s finally getting her face back."
"Yeah, who would’ve thought. Live long enough and you see everything."
"It’s a pity about back then..."
A layer of moisture blurred Wang Keru’s eyes—
That little brat Anxi, always knowing how to make her cry. Just wait till she sees her, she won’t let her off without a spanking on that little butt.
