Chapter 8 Radio, City of Apprentices
Chapter 8 Radio, City of Apprentices
Baiyu Town is connected by many trade routes.
It is more prosperous than Greenpine Town, which is near the Giant Spider Forest.
The people in Yulupine Town are mostly adventurers and mercenaries, while Whitefish Town is full of merchants.
"When I came here, Uncle Zaka said that his son should be a mercenary here, and that I should be able to find him at the Mercenary Guild."
Dorothy knows very little about the Mercenary Guild.
On the way here, this organization was present in almost every town they passed, except for villages.
It goes without saying that this organization is indeed very powerful.
Moreover, the Mercenary Guild was built in a very distinctive way; it was essentially a large tavern.
Dorothy walked towards the center of town on the brick-paved road.
Soon the surrounding crowd began to change.
There are fewer and fewer horse-drawn carriages, and more and more people wearing leather armor and iron armor.
Dorothy lowered her head and quickened her pace instinctively, still feeling somewhat intimidated by these mercenaries.
These are all people who live on the edge of a knife and risk their lives.
As Dorothy entered the Mercenary Guild, she felt a sudden darkness envelop her as a tall figure blocked her path.
"This kind of place is not suitable for young children."
Aruna looked at the thin Dorothy, her messy silver-gray hair, her faded linen clothes, and her straw sandals with holes in them.
He was a child from a poor family.
The mercenary guild is a mixed bag; it would be dangerous to let a child like that in.
Dorothy looked up at the burly man blocking her way and whispered, "I'm here to see Uncle Aruna."
"Oh?" Aruna looked somewhat surprised; he hadn't expected the child in front of him to be looking for him.
"What do you want with Aruna?"
Aruna frowned slightly as he began to recall what he had done that would leave behind such a young child looking for him.
Dorothy kept her head down and didn't say anything.
Seeing Dorothy's wary look, Aruna crouched down to be at eye level with her.
"I am Aruna."
Upon hearing this, Dorothy looked at Aruna, who was at eye level with her, and examined him carefully. Indeed, he did resemble Uncle Zaka by about 70%.
She put down her basket and reached into it, rummaging through the hay.
He took out the small cloth bag that Uncle Zaka had given him.
"Letter, I've come to deliver a letter."
"A letter?" Aruna looked at the bag held in Dorothy's small hands with some confusion.
Dorothy nodded.
"Uncle Zaka asked me to deliver it."
Aruna was stunned by Dorothy's words.
The mercenary clearly hadn't expected his father to send such a young child to deliver a letter to him.
"Uh...you must have had a long journey."
He moved his lips, but in the end, he only said this sentence.
Aruna felt a pang of guilt that a little boy had walked a hundred kilometers to deliver a message.
Aruna took the bag from Dorothy, opened it, and saw the letter his father had written to him in animal skin.
He quickly skimmed through the contents, his brow furrowed as if he were deep in thought.
Dorothy stood in front of him, waiting.
Finally, Aruna shook his head slightly, sighed, and looked at Dorothy in front of him, asking...
"Little one, what's your name?"
"Uncle Aruna, my name is Dorothy." Dorothy behaved very well.
"Dorothy, you must be tired from delivering this message all the way here. Come on, let's go inside and get something to eat."
Aruna tucked the letter into his pocket, turned and walked toward the Mercenary Guild, with Dorothy immediately following.
Aruna walked directly to the counter and tapped the wooden cabinet with her finger.
"A glass of ale, a glass of milk, two tortillas, and a plate of fried meat, please."
The bartender, who was wiping the glasses, glanced at Dorothy standing behind Aruna, then turned and walked toward the kitchen.
He returned shortly after, taking out a wooden cup to fill with ale for Aruna while teasingly saying, "What's this? The cool mercenary is starting to raise a child today? I remember you're not that old, are you, Aruna?"
Faced with the bartender's teasing.
Aruna didn't say anything, but simply took the beer offered to him and drank it down in large gulps.
"Glug glug, ha~"
After downing half a glass of wine, Aruna let out a satisfied sigh.
Then he turned to look at Dorothy.
"After you finish this meal, I'll give you another 10 copper coins as payment for delivering the message."
At this moment, the bartender pushed the milk in front of Dorothy.
Dorothy put down her basket, and just as she opened her mouth to say that she didn't need it.
"Squeak...squeak..."
A strange friction sound rang out.
The bartender's face lit up with surprise.
He turned around and fiddled with a square box in his hands.
Then a magnetic male voice came from the square box.
"Alright everyone, thank you for waiting! I'm Karl, the merchant you've all been waiting to hear from. Today, I'll be bringing you the latest news from the City of Apprentices..."
Dorothy's eyes widened in disbelief.
Aruna glanced at Dorothy, knowing that the square box in front of her must have had a great impact on the girl from the outlying village.
So he took the initiative to introduce it: "This thing is a radio, an old gadget discarded by those mages in the City of Apprentices. It can hear people talking from thousands of miles away."
"Turn on...the radio..."
Dorothy blinked and fell silent.
This magical world was far more advanced than she had imagined.
Moreover, the radio placed here is actually an obsolete model.
Of course, Dorothy also noticed another word in Aruna's words.
"The City of Apprentices?"
Aruna smiled as he looked at Dorothy's curious expression.
"Ah, the City of Apprentices, it's a must-go place for anyone who wants to become a magician in the future."
Dorothy nodded and made the news to herself.
That place is still quite far away for her now.
Dorothy looked up at Aruna.
"Brother Aruna, I don't want those 10 copper coins. Can I ask you some questions?"
"Hmm?" Aruna asked, somewhat puzzled.
Ten copper coins should be quite a lot for this child.
However, he nodded nonetheless.
Dorothy was a little excited, and she asked:
"I want to know about the Hunter School."
"Oh?" Aruna hadn't expected that this was the question Dorothy wanted to ask.
The burly man held a wine glass in his right hand and touched his hair with his left.
"Hunter School, let me warn you first, being an adventurer or mercenary isn't easy."
When Aruna heard that Dorothy wanted to inquire about the Hunter Academy, he knew that Dorothy was not at peace with herself.
Little did he know, Dorothy had her own reasons for being confident.
However, having already agreed, Aruna certainly wouldn't go back on her word.
"The Hunter School was established with funding from the Kingdom of Sauron. The tuition is very low. The curriculum mainly teaches students how to become qualified adventurers or mercenaries. It teaches the most basic magic knowledge and martial arts skills."
"Of course, there are conditions, namely, that you must serve the Kingdom of Sauron for ten years when you register as an adventurer or mercenary after graduation."
