Chapter 61 Trap and Murder
Chapter 61 Trap and Murder
Kane finished processing his thoughts but did not speak immediately.
The group then set off on their return journey, walking back along the sewer passage they had come from.
The soles of my boots were covered in filthy mud, and a pungent stench mixed with the bloody remnants of battle assaulted my senses, making me want to vomit.
Perhaps the estrangement from when they fought side by side has not yet dissipated.
The Night Watch squad had grown some distance from the Lanternmen, further than when they had come.
Shar noticed that Sienna and the others were wearing simple masks to cover their smells, and looked puzzled.
Sienna noticed her gaze and immediately walked to Kane in the middle of the group, speaking to him:
"This... could you give me a few more? I might need them for other missions."
Kane nodded in agreement.
Sienna's smile widened, and she even gave Shar a meaningful look.
Shar tightened her grip on the bow.
The next second, Kane's calm voice rang out.
"One silver coin each."
Sienna's smile froze instantly, as if she had been frozen in place.
Gavin and the others in the team were trembling from holding back their laughter, but no one dared to actually laugh out loud.
Sienna gave a harsh "humph".
She turned around and strode to the front of the line, quickening her pace as if in a fit of pique.
Kane didn't think much of it and shook his head.
On the other side, Shar's lips curled into a smile.
……
Finally, the group reached the exit of the sewer.
As soon as they emerged, everyone was covered in a lingering stench.
Reed discussed follow-up cooperation matters with Serena, the Lantern Bearer.
After some discussion, the two teams ultimately parted ways.
The lantern bearer clearly had his own plans, and Reed's expression became somewhat serious.
He then led the Night Watch squad toward headquarters.
Before they even got close to the carriage parked at the street corner, the coachman covered his nose and his expression changed drastically.
He suddenly cracked his whip and drove the carriage away as if fleeing.
The group had no choice but to walk.
Reed kept his brow furrowed, his expression grave.
Kane stepped forward and asked:
"Captain, what did the Lantern Bearers say? Are they unwilling to cooperate?"
Reed shook his head and said in a deep voice:
"They refused to cooperate, saying that several captains who had reached the second tier would work together to eliminate the mutated carrion crawler."
Kane nodded, unsurprised.
The carrion crawler we encountered in the sewers had clearly undergone severe mutation.
Its mucus-covered outer layer is exceptionally hard, making it impossible for ordinary professionals to penetrate with their bows and arrows.
Its ability to adhere to walls and ceilings also leaves melee fighters helpless.
In this situation, it would be more reasonable to have a squad of second-tier captains lead the attack.
"So, what are we Night's Watch planning to do?" Kane asked Reed.
"If nothing unexpected happens, I will also propose the same solution to my superiors," Reed said.
Kane pondered for a moment, then, remembering the side quest, he spoke:
"What if I had a way to take down that carrion crawler with our team?"
"Will the merits we receive then be upgraded to a higher level?"
Upon hearing this, Reed's eyes flashed with surprise, and then he looked at Kane seriously.
"If it can really be done, then it certainly can."
"Could I gain access to another level of spellbooks?"
"It's not a big problem."
Kane nodded immediately.
"Then we'll take care of this carrion crawler."
"Kane, we cannot risk unnecessary deaths and injuries."
Reed immediately reminded them, and Sienna, Gavin, and the others also gathered around.
Kane explained:
"There will be no casualties, because although the Carrion Crawler is powerful, it has a fatal weakness."
"What weakness?"
Reed pressed for an answer, and everyone else perked up their ears.
"It eats everything," Kane said.
Reed frowned in thought, while Sienna chimed in:
"Carrion crawlers have a high resistance to toxins because they feed on carrion year-round."
"But expensive and potent poisons need to be custom-made from the Mage Tower, which is very difficult for us to obtain."
Kane nodded.
"What if we don't use poison?"
Reed was taken aback, then his brows gradually relaxed:
"You mean...?"
Kane stopped keeping everyone in suspense and slowly revealed his plan.
As everyone listened, the worry on their faces gradually turned into astonishment.
Finally, Reed was the first to smile.
"Okay! Let's try it as you say! Even if it fails, our losses won't be significant."
Kane nodded, but his mind was on Captain Jasper of the City Guard.
"I need one more trump card."
……
The next day, the sewers were still damp and dark.
Kane's team ventured deeper into the area once more, but unlike last time, this time they were alone.
After clearing out a few mutated giant rats that had escaped, the group arrived at the area where they had previously encountered the carrion crawlers.
Braden and Gavin carried a huge sack together, walking steadily to the center of the passage.
"Put it down," Kane said.
"Bang!"
The sack slammed heavily onto the ground, splashing up a cloud of muddy water.
Seeing this, Kane stepped forward and untied the sack.
Inside was a rotting wild boar carcass.
A strange aroma of alcohol emanated from the putrid flesh.
"Next, let's retreat to the corner of the passage."
Following Kane's instructions, the group slowly retreated, remaining vigilant throughout.
Not long after, a rustling, wriggling sound came from the depths of darkness.
The rotting flesh crawler, resembling a giant centipede, slowly writhed down the ceiling once more.
It seemed to be attracted by the smell of the wild boar carcass, and a dozen slimy tentacles stretched out at the same time, tightly wrapping around the carcass.
It was dragged and stuffed into that mouth full of sharp teeth.
The dull chewing sound, mixed with the slurring of muscle contractions, sent chills down my spine.
But as the chewing continued, the carrion crawler's movements gradually slowed, and its body began to sway slightly.
"Now!"
In the darkness, Sienna's arrow shot out like a meteor, precisely aiming at the compound eyes of the Carrion Crawler!
The monster swung its tentacles to try and block, but its movements were a beat slower than usual.
The arrow pierced through the air, and dark green blood splattered out.
"hiss--!"
A sharp, short roar rang out.
The carrion crawler went completely mad and suddenly charged from the ceiling toward where they were.
"run!"
Kane shouted and turned around first.
The crowd immediately followed, frantically fleeing towards the exit.
The carrion crawlers were hot on their heels, their slimy tentacles dragging across the walls and floor with a screeching sound.
But its speed is getting slower and slower, and the numbing effect of alcohol is becoming more and more obvious.
Just as everyone was about to rush out of the sewer exit, a furious roar suddenly came from behind them from the flesh-covered crawlers.
Its speed suddenly increased, and it was about to catch up with Braden at the very back!
"Release the arrows!"
At a command, the city guards who had been lying in ambush at the entrance of the passage immediately pulled the trigger.
"Whoosh—"
A massive crossbow bolt, as thick as a bowl, shot out from the darkness, piercing straight through the slimy outer skin of the carrion crawler and embedding itself deep into its body!
Dark green blood gushed out!
The carrion crawler thrashed its tentacles in agony, but could not stop the second giant crossbow bolt from being fired.
With a "thud," the second crossbow bolt ripped open its abdomen.
The undigested wild boar carcass inside the stomach is faintly visible.
But its tenacious vitality still made it try to escape, dragging the arrows as it retreated.
"Reed!" Kane shouted.
Reed, who had been poised to act, immediately raised his hand upon hearing this:
"Blazing Orb!"
A ball of intense heat condensed and hurtled towards the direction he pointed, striking precisely the boar carcass inside the belly of the carrion crawler.
The high concentration of alcohol in the wild boar's body was instantly ignited.
With a loud "boom", raging flames erupted!
The carrion crawler roared in agony and leaped into the nearby sewage ditch, trying to extinguish the flames with water.
However, the sewage made its slimy outer layer heavy, drastically reducing its movement speed and almost rendering it unable to move.
"superior!"
Kane seized the opportunity, leaped, and landed steadily on the back of the carrion crawler.
Using the force of its fall, the scimitar plunged deep into its body.
Dark green blood gushed out, splattering all over Kane.
Sienna continued to fire arrows, accurately hitting the monster's exposed soft organs.
Gavin and Braden also stepped forward, repeatedly attacking its wounds with their spiked blades and shields.
Under the onslaught of the crowd, the flesh crawler's struggles grew weaker and weaker.
Finally, with a desperate roar, the giant monster collapsed heavily into the water, losing all its breath.
Kane looked at the "Side Quest Complete" notification that popped up on the panel and a relieved smile appeared on his face.
Sienna stared at Kane, who was covered in blood, her eyes flickering.
Just then, the sound of orderly footsteps came from the entrance of the passage.
Captain Jasper Ashby walked in with his squad of city guards.
Behind him was the massive crossbow that propelled the city gate.
Jasper's eyes widened in astonishment as he saw the fallen, rotting flesh crawler.
"Lord Kane, you really did it!"
Kane nodded to him.
This is the collaboration he secured yesterday after visiting me.
Upon learning that he only needed to ambush at the entrance of the passage and did not need to venture into the dangerous sewers, Jasper readily agreed.
And as Kane predicted, it ended perfectly.
Just as everyone was preparing to cut up the carrion crawler's corpse and move it to the cart outside.
Footsteps could be heard coming from the entrance of the passage.
The professional team of lantern bearers arrived just in time.
In addition to the members we met last time, there were four more second-tier professionals with composed demeanors.
When they saw that the target had been killed, and the Night Watch squad was almost unharmed except for being covered in a stench.
Orion, the male ranger in the lantern bearers' party, couldn't help but widen his eyes.
He cried out in alarm:
"How is this possible?"
