Chapter 76 Insight
Chapter 76 Insight
When Pharmacist Xu saw Hu Zilan and Gu Youcai, he smiled and said, "You two should also cultivate diligently and not disappoint Headmaster Huang and Commander Luo's expectations."
The relationship between Gu Youcai and Huang Mingyuan goes without saying.
As the captain of the Mountain Guard, Hu Zilan is also the most promising young member of the Mountain Guard. There are even rumors that she is the successor to the next commander. She has undoubtedly received a lot of attention and support from Commander Luo.
He was familiar with Huang Mingyuan and Luo Yi, so he took the opportunity to offer them some encouragement.
Hu Zilan and Huang Mingyuan quickly cupped their hands in greeting, saying, "Your disciple understands."
Pharmacist Xu nodded and left without saying anything more.
After he walked away, Gu Youcai looked at Chen Luo and said helplessly, "Junior Brother Chen, since you had so many backup plans, why didn't you tell me sooner? I was just about to go outside and invite Master Huang over, but the martial arts school gate had already been blocked by the people ordered by Manager Song, and no one was allowed to enter or leave."
"I didn't have time to say much then, please forgive me," Chen Luo said with a smile. No wonder Gu Youcai wasn't there earlier.
He sighed inwardly, "Indeed, there is no one easy to become a manager at Qingyun Martial Arts Academy."
Manager Song stood in the middle the whole time, neither taking sides, and he was very perceptive in assessing the situation from beginning to end.
Not to mention Steward Song, Hu Qiu is actually a capable person. When setting up mental obstacles for him, he laid out the plan step by step, and his mind was not uncommon.
Gu Youcai then turned to Hu Zilan and introduced her, "This is Hu Zilan, Captain Hu of the Mountain Guard."
"Greetings, Captain Hu," Chen Luo greeted, glancing curiously at Hu Zilan.
He remembered that Lu Qun had told him about Captain Hu's deeds. It was said that he, a woman, had chased after a pack of wolves in the North Mountain with a knife, and was incredibly brave.
Looking at it now, you can actually tell a lot from their appearance.
She had thick eyebrows and big eyes, and her skin was rather dark, unlike the fair skin of a young lady from a respectable family. Even through her tight-fitting clothes, one could sense her robust figure, which gave her a strong and powerful appearance, not at all slender. Perhaps because she often had to venture into the mountains to fight wild beasts, she still had a buzz cut, which added to her rough and unruly air.
Chen Luo had seen many burly men, but there seemed to be few who were as burly and strong as Captain Hu in front of him. This Hu Zilan was truly more manly than any man.
The only thing that hinted at her femininity was the silver chain she wore on her arm, adorned with amber beads and a small bell—a very delicate and pretty little piece of jewelry.
"Stop looking at me." Hu Zilan seemed more approachable than she appeared. Sensing Chen Luo's curious gaze, she simply smiled broadly. "Chen Luo, I've been waiting for you here for ages, just to find out what's going on. Tell me quickly."
Gu Youcai also looked over curiously; he still didn't know why Chen Luo killed Hu Qiu.
These two probably both knew that he had killed someone from Linzhou, so Chen Luo could only briefly recount everything that had happened since he entered the martial arts school.
"Chen Luo, I've heard the commander praise you several times, and I was actually a little unconvinced at the time." Hu Zilan clicked her tongue in amazement after listening, "But I'm truly impressed today. You dared to kill someone to establish your authority on your very first day at the martial arts school. I couldn't do that."
"Let alone Captain Hu, I've known Junior Brother Chen for a while now, but I never imagined he would be so courageous."
Gu Youcai nodded in agreement, then laughed and said, "I was wondering why those menial servants were dragging Cheng Yuling and Lu Cheng out like trash."
Hu Zilan said disdainfully, "Those two pieces of trash, if they were in my Mountain Guard Division, I would have killed them with my own hands. I wonder how they managed to master the Nine Yang Strength."
Chen Luo looked at Hu Zilan, "Captain Hu, there shouldn't be any members of the Qingyun Clan in the Mountain Guard Division, right?"
Hu Zilan said, "I don't know, but it doesn't matter. Our Mountain Guard has always rewarded people based on merit. As long as you can get merit, we will let you stand out no matter what kind of people you are. But if you don't have merit, you can only stand guard at the mountain pass when the inner guards come."
"I see." Chen Luo nodded. He had been worrying too much, fearing that forces like the Qingyun Clan might infiltrate the Mountain Guard Division.
Upon closer reflection, what harm is there in infiltration, as long as one can fulfill their duties?
Since disciples are not allowed to interact with each other, the three of them took advantage of the break to chat for a while, then encouraged each other before parting ways.
Watching Gu and Hu leave.
Chen Luo's smile gradually faded, and he frowned slightly. He stood there in thought for a moment before returning to the courtyard.
First, put away the two hundred taels of silver.
In fact, his counterattack against Lin Duhai was never aimed at Lin Lu; it was all for the two hundred taels of silver.
He understood a principle: strengthening oneself is more important than weakening the enemy.
Weakening the enemy is unorthodox, improving oneself is orthodox; one may occasionally resort to unorthodox methods, but the foundation must always be orthodox.
He then entered the main room and sat cross-legged on one side of the bed.
Before him stood two volumes, the Heart Sutra of Cessation and Contemplation and the Inner Strength of the Circulation, side by side, with the Nourishing Spirit Pill and the Harmonizing Qi Pill placed to the side.
He let out a long sigh of relief.
Blindly giving in is ultimately a bad strategy; only by taking decisive action can we deter troublemakers and bring peace to the land.
Now, I can finally cultivate in peace.
He picked up the scroll of the Heart Sutra of Samatha-Vipassana.
He had only skimmed through the Heart Sutra at the time and hadn't had time to read it carefully. He took a deep breath and waited until his mind was calm before turning to the first page and reading it word by word from beginning to end.
Only after reading the last word did Chen Luo truly understand the meaning of "the wondrous insight of cessation and contemplation".
Simply put, the practice of this Heart Sutra is divided into two steps.
— "Stopping" and "Observing".
Among them, "止" means stillness, which means to stop the mind from wandering and to calm all attachments.
Observation, or introspection, requires one to truly observe oneself in order to find the hidden mind hidden within the physical body.
It is worth noting that almost half of the Heart Sutra emphasizes "using stillness to aid observation, and using observation to guide stillness".
In other words, stopping and observing are not strictly sequential, but rather complementary.
Without the state of mind of "cessation," one cannot clearly observe inward; and in the process of "observation," one can give "cessation" strength and direction, preventing "cessation" from falling into dullness.
This is probably why the Heart Sutra needs to be supplemented with the Spirit Nourishing Pill, Chen Luo thought.
Because practicing this Heart Sutra often begins with "cessation" (止), one first achieves the initial stage of "cessation" before cultivating "insight" (观).
"Stopping" requires closing one's eyes and focusing the mind. However, when one first begins to practice "Stopping," there is no "Observation" to guide the mind. Closing one's eyes and focusing the mind without direction can easily lead to drowsiness and sleepiness, ultimately resulting in a deep sleep.
In other words, the "Nourishing Spirit Pill" should more accurately be called the "Spirit-Boosting Pill," as its effect is to boost energy and prevent people from becoming drowsy and falling asleep when they are "at rest."
When one perfectly achieves "cessation" and "insight," according to the Heart Sutra, one's mind and body will enter a strange state called "wonderful insight."
In the state of "wonderful vision," a person can grow a pair of "inner eyes" in their limbs and bones, also known as "wisdom eyes."
It is precisely through this "inner eye" gained from meditation that one can "subtlely perceive" the mind's aperture.
The complete process is called "Zhi Guan Miao Jian" (止观妙见). Zhi and Guan are the process, and Miao Jian is the result or effect of Zhi Guan.
Therefore, this method of mind is named the "Heart Sutra of the Sublime Insight of Cessation and Contemplation".
According to the Heart Sutra, "wonderful vision" is a kind of existence that is almost beyond the five senses. It is also known as the sixth sense. It can not only give people a pair of "inner eyes", but also enable them to realize the "body and mind", so as to truly feel the existence of their own limbs and bones.
Chen Luo asked in confusion, "If that's the case, does that mean I... am not truly feeling the existence of my limbs and bones right now?"
He was puzzled. If you can't feel your own limbs, doesn't that mean you're disabled?
"Perhaps this feeling is not the same as that feeling."
Chen Luo pondered, "In other words, compared to those who can achieve 'divine insight,' ordinary people are perhaps equivalent to disabled people."
He shook his head, stopped thinking, and summoned the progress panel.
【The Heart Sutra of Samatha-Vipassana: 0/2】
"Only 2 progress points?"
He paused for a moment, then immediately realized what was happening.
"It should be one point to stop, and one point to observe."
"No matter what, as long as the progress panel loads, that's a good thing." He smiled slightly.
As long as he can load the panel, with the characteristic of "one certificate for all," he can first cultivate the "Heart Sutra of Cessation and Contemplation" and then cultivate the "Internal Energy of the Circulation."
Chen Luo took a deep breath and then slowly calmed his breathing.
According to the Heart Sutra, although "cessation" and "insight" complement each other, they require sequential practice. First, one should practice "cessation," and then "insight" based on the foundation of cessation.
The concept of "stopping" is further divided into two states: "stopping of the body" and "stopping of the mind."
"The conflict between the Heart Sutra and the 'Inner Strength of the Circulation' is probably due to this 'body stillness'," Chen Luo muttered to himself.
Because the body must be in a state of absolute stillness, there must be no movement whatsoever, inside or outside the body.
However, it is said that after practicing the "Zhou Tian Jin", it will inevitably lead to prolonged turbulence and activity of Qi and blood in the meridians, making it difficult to achieve stillness.
What he needs to do now is to first "stop" his body, allowing it to return to absolute calm.
Chen Luo took a Nourishing Spirit Pill, closed his eyes and focused his mind, slowly exhaling and inhaling.
