Chapter 38 Hurry up!
Chapter 38 Hurry up!
The banquet lasted for nearly three hours.
The dishes of the Elven race are exquisite, each one like a painting. Honey-soaked flower petals are arranged in the shape of blooming flowers, roasted mushrooms are sliced thinly and arranged in the pattern of wings, and even the jam served with the meal is served in hollowed-out berries, with patterns drawn on the surface with silver skewers.
Ella ate without any guilt, and she was always the first to reach for each dish as it was served. Silver Leaf kicked her three times under the table, but it didn't stop her.
Arthur ate very little, and maintained the standard knightly posture from beginning to end, with his back straight, his left hand resting lightly on the hilt of his sword, and his right hand holding a fork.
Yinye barely touched her knife and fork. Chu Sheng guessed that she was thinking something like, "Your elven food isn't that great, it's not even as good as our grey elf food."
Chu Sheng ate quite a lot. Firstly, the food was indeed delicious, but secondly, he needed to convince all the elves present that he was an ordinary person who was blinded by the queen's beauty and had no suspicions.
This isn't actually difficult, because Amber Heard is so beautiful that it's hard to stay awake.
During the banquet, she sat in the main seat, just a long table away from Chu Sheng. She ate slowly, picking up a grape-sized purple berry, holding it to her lips with her fingertips, and gently biting it. The berry's juice stained her lower lip red, which she wiped away with a light lick of her tongue.
Chu Sheng looked away.
He saw a second silver chain on her left wrist, a small section of which peeked out from the edge of her sleeve, leaving a shallow indentation around the inside of her wrist.
Same as the one on my ankle!
Amber seemed to notice his gaze. She put down the berries and turned her pale golden eyes to him.
"Not to your liking?"
"No, absolutely not." Chu Sheng smiled, raising his wine glass. "It's just that it's too delicious, and I'm afraid that eating it too fast would make me seem unrefined."
Amber chuckled softly, and the elves on the long tables on both sides stopped what they were doing and turned their eyes to Chu Sheng.
Then, the moment Ambermind picked up the berry again, the banquet hall returned to its boisterous state. The elves continued talking, eating, and raising their glasses, as if the stillness had never occurred.
It was already late at night when the party ended.
Esta led the four across the vine suspension bridge. Large patches of glowing moss grew on the ground beneath the bridge, and pale blue fluorescent light spread out, as if someone had poured the entire Milky Way onto the ground of the Sacred Tree Forest.
"Your rooms have been arranged in the guest courtyard." Esta's voice sounded particularly gentle in the night. "The royal court has not received guests for a long time, so please forgive any shortcomings in our hospitality."
The guest house is built on the second branch of an ancient tree, separated from the banquet hall by two suspension bridges.
The courtyard resembles a giant bird's nest, with walls woven from vines and covered in a thick layer of moss, from which twinkling lights shimmer. The roof is shaped like a huge leaf, its veins translucent silver-white in the moonlight, like a natural lamp.
Ella and Silverleaf each have a room on the left side of the corridor; Arthur has a room on the right side of the corridor, towards the back; Chusheng's room is at the very back, right next to a window facing the forest.
"Goodnight." Estelle gave an elven bow and turned to leave.
Chu Sheng pushed open the door and went inside.
The room was more spacious than I had imagined. In the center was a low bed, and by the window was a low table with a glass oil lamp and a ceramic vase filled with honey wisteria flowers.
Chu Sheng didn't light a lamp. He sat by the bed for a while, listening to the sounds outside.
Ella's excited voice came from the next room.
"This bed is so soft! Silver Leaf, feel it! It's even softer than a carriage seat!"
Then came Yinye's helpless sigh and the rustling sound of making the bed.
Arthur's room was very quiet, but he could feel a faint fluctuation of holy light coming from the other side of the wall.
Arthur couldn't possibly miss the fact that something was so obviously wrong with the elves; she was using holy light to probe every corner of the room.
Late at night
Chu Sheng waited a few more moments before taking out the note.
The note, warmed by his body heat, was folded into a small flower and could only be unfolded by gently pulling it with your fingertips.
Chu Sheng held the paper flower in his palm and examined it for a while by the moonlight.
It was folded with great care, the creases are neat and smooth, the person who folded the paper clearly spent time on it.
He pinched the small tuft of paper at the center of the flower with his fingers, preparing to pull it open.
Just then, he felt a gaze upon him.
That gaze came in from the window and landed on his back.
Chu Sheng stopped moving. He didn't turn around, but glanced at the window out of the corner of his eye.
Tree shadows, moonlight, glowing moss, and a face.
A deathly pale face!
The face was unnaturally white in the moonlight, its features blurred, with only two dark eye sockets and a similarly dark mouth visible.
Those two dark holes stared straight at him, without blinking.
Chu Sheng broke out in a cold sweat.
That's fucking terrifying, no one could stand it.
After about two or three seconds, the face gradually disappeared when he didn't move.
Chu Sheng slowly stood up; the back of his shirt was already soaked.
He turned his head and stared at the window for a long time, but saw nothing. The shadows of the trees swayed gently, the moonlight flickered, and the moss glowed with tiny, scattered lights.
Who is it?
Who is it? Is it Estella? Or some other spirit that is monitoring them?
After struggling with his conscience for a while, Chu Sheng decided to go to the window and take a look.
He brought his face close to the window, cautiously peering out, ready to engage the enemy at any moment.
He now possesses the agility of a cat-person and the characteristics of a slime, making it unlikely that an ordinary elf could harm him in the instant he reacts.
The forest was bright under the moonlight, and the glowing moss stretched to the horizon.
An elf stood beneath the trees in the forest outside the window.
Not just a few, not just a few dozen, but hundreds!
They stood at the edge of the mossy glow, their bodies illuminated by a pale blue light from below, all their faces turned in the same direction.
Chu Sheng's window.
Hundreds of eyes were fixed on him without blinking.
Standing at the very front is Estella.
Her face still had the same warm and radiant look as during the day, and the hundreds of elves behind her wore the same smiles, as if they had been measured with a ruler.
Chu Sheng stared at hundreds of pairs of eyes for a few seconds, then stiffly raised his hand and waved to the elves outside the window.
Then he quickly turned around, picked up the paper flower, pinched the center of the flower with his fingertips, and pulled it.
The petals unfold.
The note had a line of text written on it, the handwriting neat and elegant.
"Hurry! The faster the better! Don't linger in the Sacred Tree Forest! Go to the Empire for help!"
"There are no other elves here besides me!"
