Chapter 86 A Thrilling Encounter
Hermione took a deep breath and lowered her wand. "You're right, I was too nervous."
"It's okay," Harry reassured her. "I was nervous too, but we'll be fine."
So Harry, Hermione, and Bass continued toward the center of the Forbidden Forest.
They walked for a while, going deeper and deeper into the forest, where the surrounding trees became denser.
Limited by the surrounding environment, they slowed down. Finally, after pushing aside a few tangled branches, they came to an open space.
Harry noticed a few drops of silvery-white blood on the leaves of a bush at the edge of the clearing.
He had just taken a step in that direction when a sudden, rustling sound made him stop. He and Hermione raised their wands and aimed them at the bushes.
The branches and leaves of the bush were trembling... and then, a figure wearing a black hood slipped out of the shadows behind it.
The figure was close to the ground, not like a human, but more like some kind of non-human beast.
His robes trailed on the withered branches and fallen leaves in the open space, making a soft rustling sound.
Harry, Hermione, and Toothbrush stood frozen in place until the figure approached them.
As the figure in black robes drew closer, a sharp pain shot through Harry's head—a sensation he had never felt before, as if his scar had suddenly caught fire.
He bent down, covering his scar with his right hand, his vision blurring.
"Woof! Woof! Woof woof!!"
Just then, Ya Ya started barking wildly at the figure.
The barking of Babbler broke the silence of the forest and startled Hermione from her fear.
But before she could rejoice at Ya Ya's bravery, she saw Ya Ya turn around and run away for her life.
She had no time to be surprised by Tooth's desertion, because Harry beside her was in bad shape, bent over so low that his head was almost touching the ground.
Hermione aimed her wand at the figure, and a burst of flame shot from the tip of her wand.
Without even checking the effect of her spell, she grabbed Harry's arm and dragged him toward the stone path she remembered.
At this moment, she was incredibly grateful that Professor Lynch had conducted the hellish long-distance running training in her Magic Studies class. If it had been her before the start of the semester, dragging Harry along, they definitely wouldn't have been able to run this fast!
Following Hermione's dragging force, Harry ran along on his knees.
As they got further away from that figure, Harry's head started to hurt less, and he no longer needed Hermione to pull him along so they could run faster. Their running speed increased considerably.
On the other side, the man in black robes waved his sleeves and dispersed the flames.
But the burst of flames momentarily obscured his vision.
When the flames died down, he looked again, but Harry and Hermione were nowhere to be seen in the open space.
Only a few branches at the edge were shaking violently.
The man in black let out a deep, angry roar, then smashed through the branches and chased after Harry and Hermione along their escape route. Although Harry and Hermione's running and escaping abilities had improved due to their long-distance running training, the man in black still quickly closed in on them.
As they heard the sound of snapping branches rapidly approaching from behind, a sense of despair rose in Harry and Hermione's hearts.
Toothpaste had already run away, and Hagrid was nowhere to be found. They didn't have time to shoot red sparks into the sky while they were running, and once the man in black caught up, they would have even less of a chance.
Hermione could only hope that Hagrid had heard Tooth's howl and that he was on his way to rescue them, even though she knew that Tooth's howl wouldn't carry far in the dense forest, and that it was more likely that Hagrid was completely unaware of what was happening on their side.
Just then, as the two of them crossed an invisible boundary on the ground one after the other, Hermione, who was running ahead of Harry, suddenly stopped.
Before Harry could even wonder, an indescribable fear rose in his heart.
This feeling reminded Harry of the tiger he saw at the zoo when he went with the Dursleys to celebrate Dudley's eleventh birthday. When he stood outside the cage and looked into the tiger's eyes, he couldn't help but feel a similar sense of fear.
This must be the terrifying curse that Hagrid mentioned on the stone path!
Hagrid said that if you encounter danger, you can run to the stone path!
Therefore, you must overcome your fear and not run away!
A surge of hope welled up in Harry's heart. Despite his head throbbing again, he gritted his teeth, stepped past Hermione's stationary figure, and pulled her along as they ran.
Sure enough, as they passed a large tree, the pristine white stone path appeared before them.
With their last bit of strength, Harry and Hermione collapsed onto the stone path.
He turned his head to look behind him.
Almost at the same time they reached the stone path, the figure in black robes came into his sight.
This figure in black robes was none other than Professor Quirrell, whom Lin Qi had been longing to see all this time.
He had been wandering around the Forbidden Forest almost every night, hoping to find the lone unicorn to offer to the Dark Lord, hoping to win his favor and have him teach him more powerful spells.
But for some reason, the unicorn seemed to know that I was looking for it, and its tracks were elusive, making it impossible for me to pinpoint its exact location.
Until recently, the unicorn was injured for some reason, and the wound had not healed, with a few drops of blood dripping into the forest from time to time.
I gradually determined its location.
Tonight was supposed to be a night for continuing the unicorn hunt.
But to my surprise, I ran into that damned Harry Potter!
Quirrell knew that the Dark Lord had always harbored a lingering resentment towards the little boy who had defeated him in the magical world's legend.
If I could kill him, how would the Dark Lord reward me?
Whenever he thought of this, he felt an irrepressible excitement.
To conserve energy, the Dark Lord usually sleeps most of the time.
He would only wake up when he reported the news to him.
So Quirrell always wanted to kill Harry Potter while the Dark Lord was asleep, to give the Dark Lord a big surprise.
Unfortunately, his last attempt in a Quidditch match failed unexpectedly when Snape's robes caught fire.
but now!
Fate brought this boy to its doorstep!
What a perfect opportunity!
Two defenseless young wizards appeared before him in the Forbidden Forest, such a remote place.
Quirrell decided to seize this opportunity.
Unfortunately, he was careless and they got away.
Fortunately, I had learned the Dark Lord's flight spell and quickly caught up with them.
But looking at the stone path beneath Harry and Quirrell, a bad feeling rose in Quirrell's heart.
He knew that this stone path was specially built by Lynch, and that it seemed to have some special secrets.
Quirrell immediately decided to finish the job quickly—kill Harry Potter and the little girl next to him—and then leave and return to the castle!
In a flash, Quirrell's wand emerged from beneath his black robes, and he let out a low growl:
"Avada Kedavra!"
A dazzling green light shot from the tip of his staff toward Harry.
